Direct I/O v4.0 Description:
is a device driver which enables you to directly access your hardware for your existing programs without any programming. Direct I/O is especially useful for existing 16-bit applications which access special hardware, but can also be used for 32-bit software.
It allows you to keep on using your existing software and hardware after migrating to Windows NT. There is no need to upgrade to 32-bit versions any more.
Direct I/O is a kernel mode driver together with a Virtual Device Driver (VDD). Interrupt emulation is supported for all 16-bit and 32-bit programs.
You simply specify the programs which are allowed to use Direct I/O. The risk of system corruption is minimal.
