Windows Media Resource Kit v7.0 beta
is a collection of tools and utilities designed to assist content producers in the creation, distribution, and playback of Windows Media.Windows Media Resource Kit tools are divided into the following groups: Windows Media Encoder tools, Windows Media Format tools, and Windows Media Services tools.
The Windows Media Encoder tools and utilities can assist content producers in the encoding process, and enable the editing of Windows Media-based files. The Windows Media Encoder Remote Setup Utility component can be used to automatically configure the Windows Media Encoder settings via the distributed component object model (DCOM).
The ASFChop component can be used to edit Windows Media files with an ASF extension; add markers, scripts, and properties to a Windows Media file with an ASF extension; and delete time periods from such files.
The ASF Indexer component can be used to edit Windows Media-based files with an ASF extension. You can add indexing, properties, markers, and scripts to such files, and trim the beginning and ending portions of these files.
Finally, the Windows Media Encoder Batching Utility component can be used to encode multiple Windows Media files and save them as Windows Media-based files (WMV). Different preset profiles can be used to create these files for all media content, without having to encode each Windows Media file individually.
The Windows Media Format tools enable content producers to edit, view, and convert various properties of Windows Media-based files. The Windows Media MetaFile Creator component can be used to automatically create Windows Media META files (ASX) and generate a playlist of media content that is supported by Windows Media Player 7.0. It can point to an MP3-based playlist, referenced in a Windows Media META file, and edit its properties, such as song title and file name.
The Windows Media MetaFile Cleaner component removes unsupported tags and attributes from existing META files which Windows Media Player 7.0 identifies as invalid and does not support and creates valid META files.
The Windows Media Advanced Script Indexer component allows you to edit scripts and markers within any Windows Media-based file, and place those scripts in the header portion of the file.
The AudioPlayer component can be used to play Windows Media files via commands like play and seek. It can play both local files and files read from the Internet.
The AVIToWMV component converts uncompressed files from either the audio/video interleaved AVI format or the waveform audio WAV format to Windows Media Format, while the WMAPlay component can be used to play Windows Media files (WMA).
The WMProp component can be used to display properties of a Windows Media file. For all files, three properties are listed, indicating whether the file is protected, seekable, and stridable. Additional information is also listed, including the number of streams and the bit rate and codec used for each stream.
The WMVAppend component creates one output file from the two Windows Media Format input files that users wish to append. It also determines if they are compatible for appending, checking bit rate, file types, and so on.
Finally, the WMVNetWrite component can be used to show how a Windows Media file is streamed across the Internet by displaying each streamed sample, the time at which it starts playing, and its duration.
The Windows Media Services tools enable content developers to monitor and simulate file loadings on the Windows Media server. The Windows Media Load Simulator component simulates a real-world load on a server, enabling you to view the load test results in a log. It is designed to run on one or more client computers to simulate a large number of client requests.
Finally, the Windows Media Monitor component can be used to monitor the connections of up to eight streams simultaneously via embedded players. Users can select which Windows Media Player ActiveX control to use (6.4 or 7.0), how many streams to monitor, a stream name, and the stream location. The stream location can point directly either to a stream from a server or to a Windows Media META file (ASX).
