In depth
The "Internet zone" contains anything that is not on your computer or intranet, or assigned to any other zone. Its default security level is set to medium.
The "local intranet zone" contains any addresses that do not require a proxy server. Its default security level is set to medium.
The "trusted sites zone" contains sites that you believe you can download or run files from without worrying about damage to your computer or data. Its default security level is set to low.
Finally, the "restricted sites zone" contains sites that you are not sure whether you can download or run files from without damage to your computer or data. Its default security level is set to high.
IE Zone Editor lets you set up over 200 custom zones.
