Advanced Recoloring

Developed for Paint.net, Advanced Recoloring is a plugin that enables you to replace a specific color from a photograph by tinkering with the threshold, roughness and replacement type. These options can be easily configured, especially if you're already familiarized with this particular image editor.

Easy integration with Paint.net

Setting it up takes minimal time and effort, since all you have to do is copy the downloaded DLL file to the "Effects" directory of Paint.net's installed location and restart the program if it was launched prior to this step. This also works with a portable version of the utility.After loading a photo, you can access Advanced Recoloring from the "Color" submenu of the "Effects" menu. It's marked with a tiny icon that looks like the piece of a puzzle, which acts as an indicator for all external plugins.

Configure recoloring options

The control panel has a simple and clear-cut design, showing two sliders for adjusting the threshold and roughness (continuous mode only). This can also be done by entering the numerical values or by clicking on two arrow buttons to increase or decrease this number.As far as the replacement type is concerned, you can opt between continuous and cutoff. Worth mentioning is that the effects can be previewed while fiddling with settings, so there's no need to commit changes just to be able to check results and undo the action or remove the last created layer if you're not pleased with the outcome.

Evaluation and conclusion

Although Advanced Recoloring hasn't received updates for a long time, it smoothly integrated with the latest edition of Paint.net in our tests, without causing any stability issues. It didn't freeze, crash or display error messages. Photos were quickly rendered in the preview mode and after applying modifications.
